Vein Problems

Vein problems can effect veins in legs a number of ways. Spider veins and varicose veins are usually of great concern to the individual but our vein doctors can tell you if these are simply a cosmetic concern or a visual alert to more serious underlying problems. In any case, it is best to get them checked.

Fortunately the unsightly appearance is often what motivates people to seek treatment. (See also vein procedures.) Evaluation can disclose problems that can be repaired before complications occur.

The US Department of Health and Human Services on Women’s Health estimates that 50-55% of women and 40-45% of men in the United States suffer from some type of venous problem. In fact, these types of problems in the legs are much more common than artery disease and increase as a person ages. Since this issue can advance further, veins problems should not be ignored.

Severe symptoms and underlying venous disease can be present without visible changes.

Veins Problems

  • Visual changes such as dark blue, red, or purplish veins can be seen under skin.
  • Veins that look like twisted, bulging cords.
  • Achy, burning or throbbing in legs.
  • Lower legs cramp or swell.
  • Increased pain after extended periods of standing or inactivity such as sitting or standing.
  • Itching around vein location.
  • Skin ulcers

What Causes Veins Problems?

Influences leading to veins problems can include a variety of factors.

  • Hereditary tendencies (genetic influence) are often found within families. If family members have varicose veins, chances are that you might have a higher predisposition to develop them.
  • Aging is a normal process and over time natural influences can cause malfunctions in the valves that regulate the blood flow in your legs.
  • Gender is also an influence and women, perhaps due to hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, etc), have more of a propensity of developing varicose veins. Some research indicates that female hormones might relax the vein walls.
  • Habits such as long periods of inactivity (standing or immobility) contribute to venous issues since the muscular contractions and blood flow are reduced.
  • Obesity tends to put more pressure on your veins and is a contributor to unsightly veins.
