Veins are the blood vessels that return blood to the heart, once it has circulated through the body, arteries perform the role of carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body. Both play an important role in vascular function.
Your circulatory system contains one-way valves that help keep blood flowing in the proper direction but if these valves weaken or stop functioning the way they are supposed to, blood can flow backwards and pool in the vein, causing it to stretch.
These enlarged blood vessels are classified into two groups: spider veins and varicose veins. You might see spider veins or varicose veins in legs or be concerned about spider veins in legs because they are unsightly.
What is the difference between spider veins and varicose veins?
- Spider veins are visible on the surface of the skin and appear as red, blue or purple lines. Known also as telangiectasias, there are some spider vein conditions that could be more serious.
- Varicose veins are deeper and tend to manifest as large, bluish bumps underneath the surface of the skin. These bulging veins may indicate a more serious condition is known as chronic vein disease (CVD) or manifest as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) .
