Restless leg syndrome can be a nightmare for many people with leg vein disorders, such as varicose or spider veins, by keeping you up at night and causing pain and discomfort.

The cramping and urge to move the legs that mark restless leg syndrome, or RLS, are a frequent companion to vein disorders in the legs. To make matters worse, not getting the sleep your body needs can exacerbate or worsen the RLS or other similar illnesses.

One way to test whether your restless legs are caused by some type of vein condition is to determine whether elevating your legs for a period of time relieves the symptoms. If it does, this is a sign that you should see a doctor about possible vein disorders in the legs, such as our experienced vein physicians at Advanced Vein Center.

We have some options available for treating the underlying vein conditions that can cause restless leg syndrome. Our offices, located in Portland, Maine, help patients choose minimally-invasive, safe, and effective procedures that can reduce leg pain and cramping, get rid of restless legs at night, and clear up spider or varicose veins in the legs that may be causing these issues.

Possible treatments for spider or varicose veins include sclerotherapy, which consists of injections into the affected veins that cause them to seal shut and disappear, re-routing blood through other vessels. Another is endovenous laser treatment, which uses a very thin catheter inserted into the veins to direct laser energy to the vein walls and close them with minimal discomfort or scarring. Both are gold standards of vein treatment and are performed regularly at Advanced Vein Center.

Even if you have large, bulging varicose veins, Dr. Abrahamsen specializes in another procedure called ambulatory phlebectomy, which removes surface veins in a quick, precise, ultrasound-assisted process.

Help for RLS

With proper treatment, spider and varicose veins that cause restless leg syndrome can be remedied. Vein treatments that assist in reducing RLS symptoms are typically not invasive, cause minimal discomfort, and don’t require any downtime afterward, so patients can return to normal activities with some stipulations depending on the procedure, and the condition treated.

Many of our vein patients discover that after treatment, pain and discomfort is gone almost immediately, and often permanently, which is great news whether it’s the pain that bothers you the most, or the inability to get a good night’s sleep due to RLS.

We’ll also talk with you about individualized care to prevent spider and varicose veins from returning, as well as sleep and exercise habits and lifestyle changes that can help ease restless leg syndrome and its symptoms.
