Am I At Risk Of Venous Disease?

Both men and women are at risk for vein conditions, and while it is impossible to predict who will or will not develop a vein condition in their lifetime, there are certain risk factors that increase your likelihood of developing leg veins or a venous disorder. Those include:

  • Heredity: Family history is probably the best predictor of vein disorders. That means if one or both of your parents had varicose veins, you are more likely to have them as well.
  • Age: The risk for varicose veins and other vein disorders increases exponentially with age since veins can become damaged or wear out over time.
  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop varicose veins, but men are not immune to the condition. Unfortunately, men are less likely to seek treatment, which increases their risk of complications over time.
  • Medical History: If you have a history of blood clots or a disorder known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), you are more likely to develop varicose veins.
  • Weight Gain: Additional weight puts a strain on the vessels in the lower leg as they have to work even harder to push blood back up the body to the heart. In addition, extra weight can impact the outcome of vein treatments for some patients.
  • Lifestyle Factors: A sedentary lifestyle puts you at greater risk for vein conditions since the muscles aren’t working to help pump blood back to the heart. Jobs that require long periods of sitting or standing can also increase your risk for varicose veins and other disorders.
  • Pregnancy: Women frequently develop leg veins as a result of pregnancy and can seek an expert opinion from our team when veins become or remain a concern following childbirth.

What Are Vein Conditions?

A vein condition or vein disorder occurs when a vein(s) is damaged or is no longer able to transport blood efficiently from one area of the body to another. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 50-55% of women and 40-45% of men suffer from vein conditions or venous disorders. For some, venous disorders may be a largely aesthetic concern, characterized by unsightly spider and/or varicose veins. However, others may experience painful symptoms that keep them from participating in some of the activities they once enjoyed.

How Much Do Leg Vein Treatments Cost?

The cost of your leg vein treatment will vary depending on a variety of factors including your health insurance plan, the type of treatment required, and the extent of treatment needed to help you achieve your desired results. In order to provide a more accurate and personalized cost estimate, we can gladly schedule a consultation with our team to address your questions, concerns, goals and recommended next steps.

How Do I Know If I Have A Vein Condition?

Unfortunately, because there are so many factors that influence vein health, vein conditions are often hard to predict, and prevent. That said, there are a number of outward symptoms that may signal a vein disorder, including:

  • The appearance of red or blue vein networks on the skin’s surface, known as spider veins
  • Bulging, twisting veins that look like ropes above the surface of the skin
  • Aching or fatigued legs, particularly by the end of the day
  • Leg cramping or restless leg syndrome (RLS), especially at night when you try to rest
  • Itching or burning of the skin around the vein(s) in question
  • Skin changes, like thickening or discoloration
The formation of open sores, known as venous ulcers

If you have concerns about leg veins, vein conditions or venous disease, it is always recommended to seek the advice of a medical professional.
