What Are The Benefits Of Getting An Ultrasound?
Our advanced ultrasound technology can be used to diagnose and treat the following:
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). DVT exams are used to assess deep veins in the lower legs. We complete this exam following all ablation procedures to document the closure of superficial veins and ensure that thrombus does not enter into the deep veins. A DVT exam is also used to diagnose symptoms of pain, tenderness, and swelling.
- Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy. At the Advanced Vein Center, we leverage ultrasound guidance during our sclerotherapy treatments to offer patients superior results. The ultrasound delivers enhanced imagery of the vessels that need to be treated and helps us guide the needle to precise locations during treatment.
- Venous Reflux Exam. The Venous Reflux Exam enables our providers to examine both the deep and superficial venous systems in order to identify potential valvular incompetencies that may be causing a patient’s symptoms. We first rule out deep vein pathology by performing a bilateral DVT exam. Next, we conduct a scan of the patient’s superficial venous system to identify any incompetent valves in the superficial veins. The Philips Affiniti ultrasound machine is highly sensitive in detecting reflux, also known as backward blood flow, within the superficial venous system.
- Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI). Ultrasound technology gives us the ability to screen for peripheral vascular disease. During an ABI exam, we use our ultrasound machine to locate the artery at the inner ankle, also known as the distal posterior tibial artery. Using spectral and color doppler imaging, we measure the peak systolic velocity in this area. Then, we place blood pressure cuffs on each leg to create and measure pressure in the lower ankle. This allows us to determine the specific characteristics of your arterial blood flow, providing invaluable insights as we develop your treatment plan.
